Featured Dadpreneur – Jason McCrea of McCrea’s Candies

Here’s Jason’s sweet, pun intended, tips for the Dadpreneurs of the world.

  • Retain your sense of humor.  It’s a good barometer. When I start finding that things are no longer fun, that’s when it’s time to take a break, refocus and change my perspective.
  • Be present.  It’s important to not let your entrepreneurial life get in the way of family life. Be with family when you are with family. Focus on the business when you need to but don’t let it take over.
  • Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.  Stay out of their way, learn from them, be inspired by them.  Remember that you are part of a team; it’s not about your ego, it’s about building a company full of good people.  Do your best, enable them to do their best and together you’ll succeed.
  • Take responsibility when things go wrong and give credit where credit is due when things go right.
  • Trust yourself.
  • Enjoy the journey.

A scientist by trade, a data analyst by choice and a caramel maker by passion, Jason founded McCrea’s Candies after a layoff.  With time to spare, he began cooking sweet treats and gifts for neighbors, teachers and family friends. Rave reviews and a nudge from an across-the-street neighbor gave him the courage to transition into the sweet science of making candy full-time and start McCrea’s Candies.  Under Jason guidance, McCrea’s has grown from small neighborhood company to national brand with caramel in over 1,000 retail outlets throughout North America.
